# Gander: Quick Look Preview

Select a file in Finder and press Space: Gander previews Markdown with Mermaid (exports to pdf), JSON, CSV, SQLite, Jupyter notebooks, logs and code, and turns CSV into Excel.

Gander is a Quick Look extension for macOS. It turns the Space bar preview in Finder into a real viewer for the files developers open every day: Markdown with diagrams, JSON, CSV and TSV, XML, SQL and SQLite, Jupyter notebooks, logs, .env files, YAML, code in 30 languages, archives and more. Select a file, press Space, and take a gander.

MARKDOWN, FULLY RENDERED
• GitHub-flavored Markdown: tables, task lists, math, footnotes, alerts and :emoji: shortcodes
• ```mermaid blocks drawn as diagrams inside your README
• Rendered and raw views

EXPORT TO PDF, WORD, RTF AND HTML
• Press Export in Quick Look, or open the file in Gander, and save it as PDF, Word (.docx), RTF or HTML
• Diagrams, tables, math and pictures come along; PDFs get bookmarks and links, Word files real headings and footnotes
• A4 or US Letter, with or without page numbers, plus an Export Markdown action for Shortcuts

CSV AND TSV, TO EXCEL
• A real table: header, row numbers, numbers on the right, any separator or encoding, decimal commas
• Export to Excel (.xlsx) with numbers and dates as values, a frozen header with filters, and codes such as 007 kept as written
• In Finder, right-click a CSV file and choose Services › Convert to Excel with Gander, or use the Shortcuts action
• TSV files preview in Quick Look; CSV files open in the Gander window, up to 200,000 rows

JUPYTER NOTEBOOKS AND LOGS
• .ipynb notebooks show text, code, tables, charts and errors, plus the code as one script
• .log files open at the newest line, with errors and warnings colored and a Warnings & errors filter

MERMAID DIAGRAMS
• .mmd and .mermaid files open as diagrams
• +10 diagram types: flowcharts, sequence, class, state and ER diagrams, Gantt, mindmaps, timelines, git graphs, C4 and more

JSON, XML AND PROPERTY LISTS
• JSON, JSONC (with comments) and JSON Lines as a tree or raw text; click a JSONL line number to expand that record
• XML, XSD, XSLT, RSS and Atom as an outline of elements, attributes and text
• Property lists (Info.plist, .entitlements), binary ones too, with every key's type and value, as in Xcode

SQL AND SQLITE
• .sql files open with the keywords lined up in one column, so joins, CTEs and subqueries read at a glance. The file as written is one click away.
• .sqlite and .db files open read-only: the columns, types, keys and indexes of every table, and up to 1,000 rows of each

.ENV FILES, SAFELY
• Every value is hidden by default, and likely secrets such as passwords, tokens and API keys are flagged. Values appear only when you choose to show them.

CONFIG AND CODE
• YAML, TOML, .cfg and .config files as typed, color-coded structures, plus a package.json overview
• Code in 30 languages: Swift, Python, TypeScript, Go, Rust, Java, Kotlin, C, C++, C#, Ruby, PHP, shell, Terraform and more, plus diffs, dotfiles and plain text

ON EVERY PREVIEW
• A copy button copies exactly what you see, from code to a diagram or a table

ARCHIVES AND MORE
• ZIP, XIP, tar and .tar.gz contents listed without extracting, text inside GZIP files, folder contents, and MIDI files with playback

FINDER THUMBNAILS
• Real thumbnails in icon, gallery and column views: Markdown, JSON, YAML, XML, SQL, code, notebooks, logs and archives. .env thumbnails show keys only.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN
Everything happens on your Mac. No account, no subscription, no tracking, and nothing is uploaded. Turn each preview type on or off in the Gander window.

HOW IT WORKS
Open Gander once after installing. Then select any supported file in Finder and press Space. If you still see the standard preview, turn on Gander in System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions › Quick Look.

In English, Spanish, German, French, Japanese, Chinese and Portuguese. Requires macOS 15 or later.
